When do we use neuromuscular braces?
Neuromuscular bracing is often used in patients with conditions such as cerebral palsy or spina bifida in relation to neuromuscular scoliosis.
The brace will generally be a custom made Thoraco-Lumbar-Sacral-Orthosis (TLSO) that helps to support the body and improve a person’s sitting posture, and delay progression of the deformity over time and because of gravity.
How effective are neuromuscular braces?
It should be noted that although a TLSO can be effective in initially correcting the person’s spine to a degree, it will not provide the same long-term correction as would a brace for idiopathic scoliosis.
What needs to be considered?
The fit of the brace should be monitored closely, particularly in the case of a growing child. Regular checks should be made for any marking or areas of pressure. In the case of respiratory issues, careful consideration will be made by the team before any brace is supplied.

Bracing will often be used as part of a broader management plan that may include wheelchair modifications and physiotherapy.
What are the other options should spinal bracing not be suitable?
We often use lycra suits when spinal bracing may not be appropriate for a client.
The medical use of lycra/ elastic materials is well established. It provides the torso with skintight support to aid posture and control.
We can use paneling to influence the 3D nature of the spine. Lycra suits can be used when there is a small degree of change or when there may be severe changes. Feeding tubes can be accommodated in both thermoplastic and lycra bracing this involves having a first and second fitting. We always work through every client’s difficulties and need to ensure the best appliance is supplied.
