Transverse Myelitis (TM)
Transverse myelitis is a rare neurological disorder caused by inflammatory attacks on the central nervous system (spinal cord).
TM may occur in isolation or alongside another illness e.g. a virus or infection. Symptoms can include sensory and motor disturbances such as altered sensation, weakness, bladder and bowel dysfunction and pain.
The distribution of symptoms can be asymmetrical (affect just one side of the body) or bilateral (both sides of the body). TM can affect young to old regardless of gender, race or family history.
Steriods and plasma exchange are often used as in the medical management of TM.
Muscle strengthening, spasticity management, balance, stretches, core stability and pain management form part of the rehabilitation program following TM.
We have access to therapeutic adjuncts such as functional electrical stimulation (FES) to address problems such as foot drop and muscles weakness. Stand aids as well as body weight support treadmill training are available at our clinic in Northlight Estate, Brierfield.
Ultimately, we want clients to regain as much independence as possible following TM.
