Pectus Carinatum

Also known as ‘pigeon chest deformity’ seems to be linked to the cartilage in the ribcage overgrowing. It can appear as a symptom of another disorder such as Marfan Syndrome or Osteogenesis Imperfecta or sometimes alongside Scoliosis (curvature of the spine).

We specialise in the treatment of both children and adults with the condition. Early treatment in children is essential, as the rib cage becomes more rigid after puberty. 

Pectus makes it more difficult to completely breathe out (expire) and this can reduce a child’s stamina and exercise tolerance. The psychological effects of pectus in adolescence can significantly affect the patient’s self-esteem and confidence.

The most common, and successful non-surgical treatment for pectus carinatum is to use a specially designed brace which over time applies pressure to the deformity to reduce it.

As well as the use of a bespoke brace, stretches to flexibility, improve posture and breathing exercises all help to improve the position of the sternum followed by strengthening exercises when the desired position of the chest has been achieved.
