What is Manual Therapy?
Manual Therapy physiotherapy refers to a hands-on approach where therapists use skilled techniques to assess, diagnose, and treat musculoskeletal conditions and movement dysfunctions based on a thorough understanding of anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics.
It involves the use of various manual techniques applied directly to the body, such as joint mobilisations, manipulations, soft tissue mobilisations, therapeutic massage and muscle energy techniques to improve joint mobility, reduce pain, restore normal movement patterns, and enhance overall function.
Types of Manual Therapy
There are several types of manual therapy techniques used during this treatment alongside a combination of Bobath, Neuro-Developmental and MAES Therapy techniques.
Bobath Manual Therapy:
Bobath therapy is a specialised approach to neurological rehabilitation that focuses on improving motor control and function in individuals with neurological conditions such as stroke, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, and multiple sclerosis.
This therapy aims to promote the recovery of normal movement and function by facilitating more efficient motor control and coordination. Key principles include; handling and facilitation, task-oriented approaches, active participation and problem-solving.
Neuro-Developmental Manual Therapy:
Regularly used on children, neurodevelopmental manual therapy focuses on the assessment and treatment of neuromuscular conditions particularly in children with developmental delay or neurological impairments including Cerebral Palsy.
Used to address motor control, movement patterns and functional abilities, this technique facilitates muscle activation and coordination, promotes postural control and improves joint motion.
MAES Manual Therapy:
MAES therapy (movement, analysis & educational strategies) focuses on movement analysis and intervention strategies for individuals with neurological conditions.
Assessment includes an analysis of the individual’s whole brain and body to identify the problems. Following the assessment, the treatment follows a ladder style approach to regaining skills and is mindful so as to not contribute to increasing muscle tone, reducing coordination and poor body alignment whilst trying to regain skills.
