Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy: Water-based healing method.

What is Hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy refers to the therapeutic use of water to promote physical and mental well-being. A hydrotherapy pool can help to alleviate pain, improve circulation, relax muscles, reduce stress, and enhance the overall healing and rehabilitation processes.

Used to treat a wide range of conditions, including cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, musculoskeletal injuries, arthritis, respiratory ailments, stress-related disorders and other conditions.

Types of Hydrotherapy

Our aquatic-trained therapists use a combination of Halliwick, Epps and Bad Ragaz treatment techniques in the water.

Halliwick Hydrotherapy Techniques:

Halliwick hydrotherapy is a specialised approach to aquatic therapy that focuses on promoting movement, balance, and independence in individuals with physical and/or neurological disabilities.

The Halliwick concept aims to use the properties of water to enhance mobility, improve motor control, and build confidence in the water. It is particularly beneficial for individuals with conditions such as cerebral palsy, spinal cord injuries, stroke, and other neurological or musculoskeletal disorders.

This method employs a series of progressive exercises and activities in the water, emphasising balance control, rotation, movement control and swimming as well as the use of the hydrostatic pressure of the water in different positions.

Epps Hydrotherapy Techniques:

Epps hydrotherapy is a specialised physiotherapy programme that utilises the properties of water and is carried out in a heated hydrotherapy pool.

This method has been developed by Dr Heather Epps and includes specialised therapeutic handling. It provides a range of motion therapies for both the lower limb and pelvis and the upper limbs, scapula and spine; and helps to strengthen the limbs. It is used on patients who have problems with weight bearing and provides core stability, postural support, balance, coordination and cardio-respiratory conditioning.

Bad Ragaz Hydrotherapy Techniques:

Bad Ragaz hydrotherapy is a specialised form of hydrotherapy used for rehabilitation and the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions.

This particular method focuses on the application of warm water and specific movements to promote relaxation, pain relief, and improved mobility. The therapy typically takes place in a warm pool or a specially designed hydrotherapy pool with underwater jets and aims to improve joint range of motion, strength, and functional abilities while reducing pain and muscle tension.
