Motor Neurone Disease (MND)

Motor neurone disease (MND) is a devastating, rare progressive condition that affects motor neurones of the brain and spinal cord.

Motor neurones send signals to the muscles which are responsible for movement, breathing, speaking, and swallowing.

In MND motor neurones gradually stop working, muscles weaken and can get stiff. It is unknown why this happens.

Symptoms affecting your movement such as clumsiness, tripping and difficulty climbing stairs can be early signs of MND. These symptoms gradually worsen affecting communication, swallowing and breathing.

There is no cure for MND, it is a life shortening condition. Physiotherapy, equipment and medication can help to manage symptoms and reduce the impact on a person’s daily life.

We offer a specialised assessment and treatment to help improve posture, stretching and strengthening exercises to help reduce pain, stiffness, increase range of movement and improve circulation.

We can advise you on assistive devices such as supports, braces, orthotics, and wheelchairs to help prolong independence.
