What is Walking and Movement Physiotherapy?
Walking and Movement Physiotherapy refers to a specialised area of physical therapy focused on improving a patient’s gait and overall mobility: Gait Training.
This type of physiotherapy employs a variety of techniques and exercises designed to strengthen muscles, increase flexibility, enhance balance, and correct improper movement patterns.
The goal is to increase independence, safety, and efficiency in ambulation and other functional movements and can be supported through various transfer aids and equipment including; walking sticks, crutches, zimmer frames, balance trainers, standing frames, trikes, sleep systems and specialised equipment; including our Biodex Gait Trainer 3 and our Body Weight Support Treadmill Trainer.
Types of Walking and Movement Therapies
Walking and movement therapies can include an array of aids including walking sticks, crutches, zimmer frames, balance trainers, standing frames, trikes, sleep systems, our Biodex Gait Trainer 3 and our Body Weight Support Treadmill Trainer.
Biodex Gait Trainer 3
The Biodex Gait Trainer 3 is a specialised rehabilitation device designed to help improve an individual’s walking ability (gait). It’s a type of treadmill that incorporates biofeedback technology to provide real-time, visual feedback to patients about their step length, step speed, and right-to-left time distribution and symmetry.
This device is used during rehabilitation for patients recovering from a variety of conditions that have impacted their ability to walk. These conditions may include cerebral palsy, stroke, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, amputation, care of the elderly and various neurological disorders.
By providing immediate feedback on key parameters of walking, the Biodex Gait Trainer 3 allows patients to make immediate corrections to their gait, enabling them to improve quickly. It’s equipped with handrails for safety and support and can be used along with other therapies such as Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) to maximise rehabilitation.
Body Weight Support Treadmill Trainer
Body Weight Support Treadmill Trainer also known as; BWSTT is when a client’s body weight is supported using a harness and overhead suspension system whilst on a treadmill; such as the Biodex Gait Trainer 3. It can be used to practise standing and walking, and therapists can assist with the stepping and trunk action.
As a result of the harness and unweighing system, clients have the ability to practice standing and walking in a safe and progressive way. The system can also be used to improve endurance and fitness levels without the fear of falling and is suitable for children and adults with a variety of conditions and complaints.
