Schroth Method
At Let’s Go Physio, we are re-shaping the way Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis is treated in Lancashire and the North West.
What is the Schroth Method?
The Schroth Method is a non-surgical physiotherapy approach for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis that uses targeted, mobilising and strengthening exercises.
We often combine this physiotherapy treatment with a custom-made, discreet but effective Gensingen Brace by Dr. Weiss™ (GBW).
These proven treatment methods can result in spinal realignment, improved posture and comfort for growing adolescents.
What is Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis?
Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) is the most common type of scoliosis and involves a sideways curvature of the spine that develops during adolescence.
Depending on the Cobb angle, the best results are achieved with Schroth exercises and GBW during the growth period of both boys and girls. It is more difficult to influence the curve (the cobb angle), although not necessarily the appearance, after puberty.
This will all be explained on an individual basis on assessment, but if started early and whilst still growing, scoliosis bracing and exercises can reduce the Cobb angle, which quantifies the severity of spinal curvature and often eradicates the need for surgery.
Depending on the Cobb angle, clients may only require Schroth exercises and not necessarily a brace.
How can the Schroth Method help?
Scoliosis can be treated very successfully with physiotherapy and a brace should the patient require one.
The success of the Gensingen brace is significantly elevated when combined with physiotherapy such as the Schroth method. The Schroth method is a non-surgical treatment that involves exercises to help the spine to return to a more natural position.
The goal of Schroth exercises is to overcorrect the atypical curve and to strengthen and de-rotate the spine.
Benefits of the Schroth Method
There are numerous benefits of using physiotherapy to treat scoliosis. Some of the key advantages include:
- Reducing the cobb angle
- Improved appearance
- More body confidence
- Pain management
- Prevention of deterioration
- Enhanced quality of life
What to Expect - Your Scoliosis Package of Care
1. Getting Started – Initial Assessment (within 2 weeks)
We’ll begin with a thorough assessment at our private physiotherapy and orthotic practice in Nelson, Lancashire to understand your unique needs and create a care plan that’s just right for you. Quotations for a home visit can also be provided on request.
We will request a copy of your x-ray results and will require details of your cobb angle and risser score.
2. Stronger Together – Start Schroth Therapy
You will begin customised exercises with your named physiotherapist and be given exercises to do at home with the support of a treatment app.
3. Getting the Perfect Fit – Brace Measurement (within 2 weeks)
Should a brace be recommended, we will take detailed measurements to create a custom-made brace that fits comfortably and works with your body.
4. Brace Fitting Day (within 3 to 4 weeks)
We will make sure the brace fits well by adjusting the pads and straps. You will have plenty of opportunity to practice putting the brace on and taking it off so that you are comfortable and the brace is most effective. We usually ask for an in-brace x-ray to
check the correction three weeks after the initial fitting.
5. Living Well with Your Brace – Ongoing Support (6-12 month)
We will provide ongoing support and education about your wearing schedule and skin care, and we will monitor growth-related changes as a second brace may be needed due to these. Our orthotist and physiotherapists will work in close collaboration so that your goals remain the focus of our treatment plan.
