MSK Physiotherapy

MSK Physiotherapy: Hands-on therapy techniques.

What is MSK Physiotherapy?

MSK stands for musculoskeletal physiotherapy. Therapists use skilled techniques to assess, diagnose, and treat musculoskeletal conditions and movement dysfunctions based on a thorough understanding of anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics.

It involves the use of various manual techniques applied directly to the body, such as joint mobilisations, manipulations, soft tissue mobilisations, therapeutic massage and muscle energy techniques to improve joint mobility, reduce pain, restore normal movement patterns, and enhance overall function.

Types of MSK Physiotherapy

MSK Physiotherapy includes massage, muscle energy techniques, NAGs and SNAGs, and hands-on mobilisation techniques. As well as joint/ maitland mobilisations, soft tissue massage and myofascial release.

Massage and Muscle Energy Techniques

MSK physiotherapy massage and Muscle Energy Techniques (METs) are hands-on treatments that use manual manipulation to relieve pain and improve mobility.

While massage focuses on soft tissue manipulation, METs involve the patient using their own muscle energy against a therapist’s resistance. This helps to relax and lengthen muscles and restore joint function. Both treatments are used to treat pain, tightness, and reduced range of motion.

NAGs and SNAGs

NAGS (Natural Apophyseal Glides) and SNAGS (Sustained Natural Apophyseal Glides) are manual therapy techniques used to treat musculoskeletal conditions affecting the spine and limbs.

NAGs are small, repetitive glides used primarily on the cervical and upper thoracic spine. Whilst SNAGs are sustained glides applied to the spine, rib cage, and sacroiliac joints, intended to increase range of motion and reduce pain.

Maitland Mobilisations, and Soft Tissue Massage

Maitland mobilisations and soft tissue massage are manual therapy techniques used to improve joint and soft tissue function.

Maitland mobilisations focus on graded, passive joint movements to relieve pain and stiffness. Soft tissue massage involves manual manipulation of muscles to release tension and break up scar tissue.

Myofascial Release

Myofascial release uses sustained pressure to to release tension in the myofascial tissues, which are the connective tissues surrounding muscles. This gentle, hands-on technique can help alleviate pain, improve flexibility, and restore range of motion by targeting “knots” and adhesions in the fascia.
