At Let’s Go Physio, we understand the challenges faced by individuals with neurological conditions these being muscle weakness, spasticity and movement difficulties and many more. These conditions can significantly impact daily activities and overall quality of life.
In this blog post, we’ll explore innovative therapies like Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) and how they can benefit individuals with neurological conditions at Let’s Go Physio.
Introduction to Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)
Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) is a therapeutic technique that uses electrical impulses to activate nerves and strengthen muscles. It provides a sensory stimulation to the muscle groups also so clients are more likely to feel their muscles activating and moving, all to restore movement, strength and function.
FES can be applied to various muscles within the body such as for foot drop, knee and trunk control as well as upper limb function.
Lower Limb Use
One of its main functions is for individuals experiencing foot drop, a condition characterised by difficulty lifting the front part of the foot, often due to neurological impairments.
By stimulating the peroneal nerve, at the side of the shin, FES helps lift the foot during walking, improving gait and reducing the risk of trips or falls.
FES can also help strengthen the muscles and improve circulation in the legs by improving walking and exercise tolerance in patients.
It can be used to strengthen the weaker leg such as the gluteal, thigh or calf muscles at rest and also during functional tasks such as sitting to standing or at specific points in the gait cycle for instance during a (tandem) step standing position.
Upper Limb Use
Used to stimulate the muscles in the hands and arms. FES can help improve functionality in patients who may have experienced a stroke, spinal cord injury, or other neurological conditions like multiple sclerosis that affect the upper body and can assist with activities such as gripping, lifting, and other tasks that require fine motor skills.
By delivering controlled electrical impulses, FES promotes muscle contraction, enhancing strength and endurance.
This stimulation not only aids in muscle activation but also contributes to the prevention of muscle atrophy, a common concern in individuals with limited function.

Support With Funding
FES can be available on the NHS via Individual Funding Request (IFR)’ recommended in the NICE Clinical Guidelines for Long Term Neurological Conditions.
“This guideline covers rehabilitation in all settings for children, young people and adults with a chronic neurological disorder, neurological impairment or disabling neurological symptoms due to acquired brain injury, acquired spinal cord injury, acquired peripheral nerve disorder, functional neurological disorder or progressive neurological disease.”
We can support individuals to secure IFR requests via their GP, please get in touch with our friendly team to enquire about this service.
